This is a world class facility which is looking maximize refinery margins by processing a large proportion of opportunity crudes which are cheaper to procure. The new project was to process high acid crude in the existing facility. An effective online corrosion monitoring system that is easy to install and maintain is critical to ensure the integrity of the refinery infrastructure while processing high acid crudes. This workshop will show on how Emerson’s non-intrusive corrosion monitoring system over the traditional corrosion monitoring systems and how it helped HMEL to achieve the refinery margins. Traditional inspection does not provide a frequent enough picture of asset integrity to afford early detection. Corrosion probes involves replacement cost and high safety concerns on the replacement procedures. The intrusive probe creates a disturbance in the flow of the fluid that can potentially induce corrosion. Wiring the probes back to the control room can be complex in an existing plant. Real time thickness monitoring provides the ability to process high throughput of cheap high acid crude without compromising the integrity of the plant. Opting for this tighter monitoring system along with chemical inhibition results in a payback that is measured in the order of 2 months for 100 sensors. Easy to install and maintain. Eliminates the need for replacing probes which can be unsafe. Emerson’s non-intrusive integrity monitoring system is readily installed online and measures the wall thickness of the fixed equipment and pipeline using ultrasonic sensors. Poor combustion causes higher fuel costs and increased emissions. Lack of reliability and response hurts site production throughput and quality. A root cause of poor boiler operation is often inadequate process measurement, and this is often due to the fact that many combustion process parameters are difficult to measure reliably and repeatably. This session will provide guidance on how to overcome tough boiler measurement challenges including where to place devices, preferred technology choices, and installation methods. For ideal operation, boiler process parameters must be measured repeatably. But, this is often difficult due to mechanical arrangements and fast changes in the process that result from load swings and fuel variations. Air, fuel, drum level, oxygen, and emissions measurements are critical to combustion control, but can be difficult to accomplish repeatably over the load range. Correctly selecting and installing measurement devices for key boiler process parameters provides the foundation for achieving robust, optimal control that simultaneously delivers higher reliability, improved response, lower fuel costs, and reduced emissions.
